Senator Nancy Skinner and Assemblymember Buffy Wicks teamed up with Attorney General Rob Bonta on two proposed laws that are aimed at protecting kids while they’re online.

One bill, the Protecting Youth from Social Media Addiction Act, focuses on dealing with social media addiction. The other is aimed at protecting personal data for people under the age of 18, which is called the California Children’s Data Privacy Act.

KNX News’ Jon Baird reported that Bonta said the first bill deals with what comes up on children’s social media feeds.

“Based on their choice and the things that they want to see as opposed to the addictive algorithmic feed that is presently being fed to our children,” he said.

Bonta also said parents would have more control over when social media notifications happen. For example, under new default settings, “there are no social media notifications between midnight and 6 a.m.,” he explained.

There would be another default setting that would limit the amount of time a child can stay on social media to one hour.

Bonta and the lawmakers expect that some social media firms will challenge the proposed laws in court.
