HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KNX) – A Northern California man is missing after his family said he went out to sea for a treasure hunt he was creating.

21-year-old Hunter Lewis from Blue Lake, was reported missing on Dec. 30, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Lewis’s father, Corey Lewis, told the newspaper his son had planned an intricate treasure hunt for his family and friends.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office believes that Lewis, “an experienced canoesit and kayaker” according to his dad, went out on the water to hide things for the treasure hunt.

On New Year’s Day, a piece from a wooden bucket Lewis was using in the treasure hunter washed up on Trinidad State Beach on Tuesday morning.

Special Services deputies and the U.S. Coast Guard have conducted searches on land, sea, and via helicopter. Volunteer searches have also been conducted. A Facebook group entitled, ‘Trinidad, CA. Search for Hunter Lewis’ was established where people have shared where they searched for Lewis.

Lewis is described as 5’10, 135 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair.

Anyone who has seen Lewis or has any information about his whereabouts is asked to contact the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at 707-445-7251.
