California Attorney General Rob Bonta urged the FCC to speed up regulation on phone carriers responsible for robocalls that use fake caller ID numbers.

Bonta, who’s working with a coalition of other attorney generals across the nation, told KNX 1070 that faster implementation can reduce caller ID uncertainty and the technology do so is there.

“The technology is there and consumers deserve earlier action so we ask that they take that action a year faster than the timeline they want,” he said.

Bonta’s office says Americans can expect to receive 54 billion illegal robocalls this year, with many of them appearing as government agencies or local numbers on the caller ID.

“They have a two year timeline to require companies to implement some of the new consumer protection loss due to robocalls that can be used to cheat and scam individuals in California and beyond,” Bonta said.
