The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a boom in pet adoptions in L.A. County, with residents finding themselves spending more time at home.

"Lockdown loneliness" created an unprecedented demand for cats and dogs. Shelters and rescue organizations have, at times, been overwhelmed with interested would-be adopters, and have had to turn candidates away, or add them to ever-expanding waitlists.

San Diego County, however, has reported a recent influx of cats and dogs needing homes. The County Department of Animal Services said its two shelters are nearly full.

Officials are asking the public to consider adopting or fostering some of the resident animals. They are also offering discounts to adopters. Adoptions fees have been waived entirely for adult cats six months and older. Adoption fees for kittens have been slashed to just $25, as well as for pit bull, pit mix, husky and husky mix dogs.

The surge in adoptable pets in San Diego was partially attributed to 50 cats being recovered from a single owner, Animal Services said.
