SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – A 37-year-old man was arrested Sunday in Chico, Calif., for allegedly planning a “Las Vegas style” mass shooting, including alleged death threats against law enforcement officials.

Next week will mark the fifth anniversary of the Las Vegas massacre, which to date is the deadliest mass shooting by a single individual in U.S. history. Gunman Stephen Craig Paddock killed 58 people and wounded 867 others from a room at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas strip.

According to the Chico Police Department, Dallas Marsh “was preparing to commit a similar mass shooting with a specified deadline ahead of his arrest. He “was making criminal threats to kill specific individuals, specified law enforcement officers,” said authorities.

They also said detectives with the Chico Police Department’s Violence Suppression Unit obtained evidence of Marsh’s plans. Through an investigation, they gathered that he was staying at a Super 8 Motel in Chico.

“As a result of the investigation, Marsh was subject to a no-bail felony arrest warrant,” for criminal threats of death/great bodily injury. Members of the Chico Police Department SWAT Team located and arrested him without incident at approximately 8:50 a.m. Sunday near the motel.

However, police said Marsh made threats to kill additional officers and their families after his arrest. He also allegedly battered an officer with a table during the interview process.

Marsh now faces additional charges of battery on a peace officer and threats of violence against peace officers. These charges were requested when Marsh was booked into Butte County Jail. Police categorized his arrest as a “terrorist threat” apprehension.

While the Las Vegas massacre was nearly five years ago, mass shootings continue to occur in the U.S. Just this year, events in Buffalo, N.Y., Uvalde, Texas, and more have claimed lives. According to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive, there have been more than 500 mass shootings in the U.S. so far this year.
