California is officially reopened today.
The Department of Public Health dropped many of the restrictions adopted in the last 18 months of the coronavirus pandemic. Here is how the lifting of those restrictions will affect most Californians.
Masks
Fully vaccinated individuals can mostly ditch the mask. There are exceptions.
Regardless of vaccination status, the Department of Public Health requires individuals to wear a mask on public transportation, indoors at schools and childcare settings, healthcare and correctional facilities, and homeless shelters.
Public transportation includes airports and planes. So, anyone looking to hop on a flight to celebrate should still wear their mask.
Masks remain mandatory for non-vaccinated people at indoor public settings.
Work
The state’s Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board has gone back and forth on what the reopening will mean for workplaces. Regulators will vote on the latest proposed rules on Thursday, including whether or not to allow fully vaccinated workers to go mask-free.
The rules adopted by the safety authority were expected to take effect on June 28, but Gov. Gavin Newsom said he will issue an executive order to implement the new rules as soon as the board votes.
The proposed changes would still require unvaccinated workers to wear masks in indoor workplaces.
Out and about
With the majority of businesses not needing to see proof of vaccination, it will be up to the honor system whether people wear masks out. Businesses can still adopt a mask-required policy. They cannot, however, bar an individual’s entry if they chose to wear a mask.
Capacity limits for restaurants, theme parks, bars and other businesses are gone.
Fully vaccinated guests at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim will no longer be required to wear masks.
Sporting events are back on with stadiums full of cheering, mask-less fans.
In fact, the Dodgers will celebrate Reopening Day by returning to full capacity for the team’s 7:10 p.m. game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Limited tickets remain available at Dodgers.com/tickets.
Face coverings will still be required for people visiting museums in Exposition Park.
The California African American Museum, California Science Center and Natural History Museum will still require masks.
