The California Racial and Identity Profiling Advisory Board wants to address racial profiling.

The board, which is tasked with overseeing racial profiling in law enforcement, met Tuesday on the National Day of Racial Healing. KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian spoke to Andrea Guerrero, co-chair of the RIPA board, about racial profiling in the state.

“Public safety depends on public trust. There can be no trust if there is no accountability,” she said. “We need to know that law enforcement is helping, not harming our communities. And that's our work this year.”

The board collected data from more than 4.5 million stops and said it's clear racial profiling is happening across the state. State leaders said they need to use the data to make changes.

“It's time to move on from the question of whether profiling exists and look to answering the question of how we end or change the policies and practices that enable it,” Guerrero said.

Rob Bonta, the California Attorney General, said the National Day of Racial Healing is the time to address the trauma and harm that’s caused by systematic racism.

“This is a moment for us to have authentic conversations, to listen, to be open to one another's unique outlooks and experiences to build trust-based relationships with all who share a commitment to racial healing,” he said.

Bonta said the California Department of Justice launched a Racial Justice Bureau to help foster relationships with historically underrepresented communities.
