SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KNX) — If you’re one of the millions of California residents who received unemployment payments from the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program, you may have to prove you had a prior work history.

The state’s Employment Development Department announced about one-third of those who received money from the PUA now have to prove they were qualified to receive those benefits. Otherwise, they must pay it all back, according to the Sacramento Bee.

The EDD added it will include a “30% penalty” if it is concluded someone purposefully gave false information or withheld information in order to get benefits.

There are several types of documentation that can be used a proof. This includes, but is not limited to, a tax return, business receipt/invoice, pay stub, letter from employer that has the date of work in which employment was to begin and state and federal employee identification numbers.

Those who filed a claim but never received payment will still have to provide documentation.

Those who received benefits last year need to show forms that with proof of work from 2019. Those who began getting payments in 2021 need to send documents from 2020.

The EDD has reportedly sent out notices to those who need to submit information, ABC 7 reported.

The PUA was created in March 2020 to help those impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic.
