The California Department of Food and Agriculture has issued a recall and quarantine order on raw goat milk produced at a Stanislaus County farm, California State Veterinarian Dr. Annette Jones announced Monday.
Valley Milk Simply Bottled produced and distributed the recalled goat milk. The order applies to versions of the product dispersed in "half gallon plastic jugs with a code date marked on the container of AUG 28 2021," a release from the agency stated.
The quarantine order was given after routine testing by the agency detected, and eventually confirmed, that the goat milk contained the bacteria Campylobacter jejuni. Exposure to the bacteria can lead to symptoms of an illness called campylobacteriosis.
The agency said no illnesses have been reported and the order does not apply to Valley Milk Simply Bottled’s raw cow milk or raw sheep milk.
Symptoms of campylobacteriosis include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever.
Most people recover completely from the disease within a week, however people with compromised immune systems can contract a serious, life-threatening infection.
Retailers were directed to pull the products from their shelves immediately and consumers were urged to throw out any of these bottles.
