SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KNX) — The California Highway Patrol has instituted a maximum enforcement period ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend — one of the busiest of the year for travel. The period will entail intensified patrols to curb unsafe driving.
Authorities said enforcement begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday and will continue through midnight on 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, according to the agency. CHP officers will be looking out for unsafe or distracted driving, signs of intoxicated driving, speeding, and seat belt violations.
"Wherever you choose to celebrate this Thanksgiving, drive safely," CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray said. "When getting behind the wheel, make certain you and all your passengers buckle up before heading out, and remember to always avoid distractions."
During last year’s Thanksgiving holiday, CHP arrested more than 860 people for DUI. Thirty-three were killed on state roadways during that same period.
