The California State University finance committee will review a proposal today to implement 6% annual tuition hikes starting in fall 2024.

The tuition hikes are aimed at reducing the university system’s $1.5 billion budget shortfall. The proposal claims that it would provide CSU with “necessary resources” while enhancing affordability for students with “the greatest financial need.”

CSU’s current $5,742 undergraduate tuition is among the lowest in the country – hasn’t been raised in a decade. Under the new proposal, tuition for full-time undergrads would be raised by $342 in the first year, with similar 6% increases every year until 2028-29.

Over half of CSU’s 460,000 students have their entire tuition covered through grants, waivers, and scholarships. Their costs would still be covered in full after the proposed increases, officials told the Los Angeles Times.

The proposal needs approval from the full Board of Trustees to move forward. It’s scheduled to be put to a vote in September.
