The California Teachers Association has issued a warning following a viral TikTok challenge that involves slapping teachers and school staffers.
“Slapping an educator, regardless of whether it results in injury, is assault and battery, and is completely unacceptable,” the association wrote on Facebook. “Recording in a classroom or on other school property without permission is illegal.”
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Unified School District said that no incidents of students slapping teachers have been reported at this time, the L.A. Times reported.
An incident was however reported in Lancaster County School District in South Carolina.
“Sadly, we actually had an elementary student assault a teacher by striking her in the back of the head,” the county wrote on its official Facebook page. “This type of behavior just like theft and destruction of property is not a prank. It’s criminal behavior.”
On Twitter, Connecticut Attorney General William Tong called on Tiktok to “come to CT to meet with educators and parents and commit reforms that stop this reckless content.”
The challenge comes right after another viral trend on the social media app called “devious licks”, in which students would steal or vandalize school items, including items from school restrooms such as toilets and toilet paper.
When KNX 1070 went on the popular social media app to see if any videos of the latest trend were posted, no videos were found but the following message was seen:
