Multiple reports from Washington say that Burbank Congressman Adam Schiff, who took the lead role for Democrats during last year's impeachment trial, is now quietly lobbying to be named the next Attorney General of California.
The role is empty as Xavier Becerra is leaving to become Health and Human Services Secretary, and it will be filled by appointment by Governor Newsom.
Political analyst Jack Pitney, of Claremont McKenna College, tells KNX 1070 News it's a tricky call for Newsom.
"Schiff doesn't add a great deal of Democratic diversity given that he is a white male. On the other hand, he is a hero to many Democrats both in California and nationally because of his role in the impeachment of Trump. The calculation for Governor Newsom is 'do you pick someone with a lower profile?' as opposed to Adam Schiff who is extremely well-qualified and does energize a large portion of the Democratic base," he says.
The reports say that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has given her blessing to Schiff's bid for the Attorney General job.
Schiff has not commented on the reports.
