More than 7,000 gallons of diesel fuel were stolen from a Rancho Bernardo gas station, authorities said Thursday.
The theft was believed by the station owner to have occurred sometime between midnight and 3 a.m. from July 1 to July 7, except for July 4, according to Fox5.
The Shell station's owner, Ash Keshavarz, told the TV station he noticed on July 8 there were low diesel fuel numbers and determined that 7,368 gallons were unaccounted for, which was valued at $41,998.11. He said the thieves pumped fuel from only one pump.
Surveillance video showed white box trucks visiting the station after hours, Keshavarz said. One truck was used to steal fuel and the other truck tried to block the cameras.
San Diego Police Department detectives were working with state and federal partners to investigate the theft.
"They look at who might have motive, who might have knowledge, who might have ability," said SDPD Lt. Adam Sharki. "It's really hard to disappear 7,000 gallons of liquid fuel, where they might be headed, where might that be going, who has information? Somebody knows something."
