IRVINE, Calif. (KNX) – An evacuation was underway Monday after the blizzard left hundreds of Irvine Unifies students snowed in at two science camps.

Around 600 sixth to eighth graders with the Irvine Unified School District have been at the science camps in Running Springs since last week. The students were supposed to go home Friday when the blizzard hit.

That’s when district officials decided to keep the kids at the camp.

Irvine Unified spokesperson Annie Brown told KNX News the kids had plenty of food and heat and that there was power the entire weekend.

Brown added that they are working California Highway Patrol and CalTrans to safely transport the kids students down the mountain.

“…So as soon as we got the green light from the CHP that the road conditions were safe enough for our students to be transported, we mobilized resources and began implanting our plan to get kids home,” she said.

Brown also asked that parents be patient with the process.

“We need to send snow certified buses with chains to snow certified drivers to shuttle students down the mountain…and from there they’ll be transferred to additional school buses for their last part of the journey home,” she explained.
