Sarajane Parfitt underwent surgery in June 2021 at Community Regional Medical Center, according to a lawsuit obtained by the Sacramento Bee. She was supposed to have her “diseased kidney” removed, but instead, the surgeon removed her spleen.

Court documents cited by the outlet revealed the mistake went unnoticed until the pathologist identified the organ as a spleen.

Parfitt’s attorney, Paul Pimenetel, told ABC 30 the mistake put Parfitt at risk.

“She's at risk for infections and she has to be very sensitive to that issue," he said. "She's had to have a lot of injections to prevent infections in the future. And she still needs her kidney out."

Although multiple people were named in the lawsuit, one attorney told the Sacramento Bee that one of the doctor named in the lawsuit was not involved in the surgery; however, the surgeon was actually “a visiting surgeon.”

In a statement to multiple outlets, Community Regional Medical Center said that while they offer “sympathy” for Parfitt and her family, they are unable to comment at this time as the case is pending.
