SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KNX) – Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order Saturday that prevents price gouging at-home COVID-19 tests.
“Helping to improve access to these tests at a fair price, the order generally prohibits sellers from increasing prices on COVID-19 At-Home Test Kits by more than 10 percent,” according to a release by the governor’s office.
“The order also gives additional tools to the California Department of Justice and Attorney General’s Office, District Attorneys and other local law enforcement to take action against price gougers.”
Also on Saturday, Gov. Newsom revealed his proposed $2.7 billion COVID-19 Emergency Response Package, which would allocate $1.4 billion toward COVID-19 testing, as well as vaccination and booster efforts and support frontline workers. The governor says the money would also go toward fighting misinformation.
On Friday, Gov. Newsom announced over 200 members of the California National Guard would be deployed to 50 COVID-19 testing centers across the state “in an effort to conduct more tests for more Californians."
