A major rockslide on Friday has blocked a popular route heading to the south shore of Lake Tahoe ahead of the weekend rush.

Caltrans shared striking images of the slide on Twitter, largely made up of big boulders, on Highway 50 just east of Echo Summit early Friday.

Both the eastbound and westbound lanes remain closed.

It's not clear how long the roadway will be closed.

KCBS Radio's Kim Wonderley recommended Highway 88 as a possible alternate route, which connects with Highway 89 northbound. Another alternate route from the Bay Area would be taking I-80 to Truckee, then south.
