HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KNX) – Huntington Beach residents will have to switch back to SoCal Edison after city officials decided to leave Orange County Power Authority.
The City Council made the decision in a vote Tuesday night. The switch will be flipped next summer.
Councilmember Casey McKeon called Orange County Power Authority a “total disaster”, according to the Orange County Register.
“I believe in providing choice to consumers, but I don’t believe the government is a vehicle to providing choice in the private sector, especially not in the incredibly complex and volatile energy market,” she said.
It comes after the controversial agency’s CEO, Brian Probolsky, was let go by board members in April. He was fired after the agency received criticism from the State Auditor’s Office and failed four audit, with its purchasing contracts and transparency failures cited as the agency’s issues.
Orange County voted in December to pull out of a contract with OCPA.
OCPA, which launched in 2020, was intended to be an alternative to SoCal Edison and “embrace a cleaner energy future.”
