Our KNX Hero of the Week is a young climate activist who is passionate about saving the environment. And, he hasn't let wind, rain or cold temperatures stop him from cleaning-up a local hiking hotspot!
Every day, 20 year-old Edgar McGregor heads out to Eaton Canyon. Every. Single. Day. He grabs a couple of buckets and walks along the streets, pathways, hillsides, through the wash and by the waterfall, picking up trash and debris that hikers, visitors and litterbugs have left behind.
"It's really been an amazing mission," says Edgar. "I've learned so much about my park, and I've met so many people out there. And, I've been able to inspire people all around the world, to clean up!"
For nearly two years now, starting back in May of 2019, Edgar has made the daily effort.
"The most common item(s) would be water bottles, and aluminum cans. People bring them on their hikes, and when they finish drinking them, they just drop it on the ground," explains the Pasadena College Student. "When the pandemic started, there were a lot of disposable masks. However, as people started buying cloth masks, I started to see them less frequently."
"I've also found odd and ends out there too, like patio heaters and propane tanks, which are huge wildfire threats!" remarks Edgar.
Often times, Edgar heads out to the canyon after his college classes, or a full day of work. "I was actually working in a warehouse, 8 to 12 hours a day, doing a lot of physical labor. And, despite that, I was still going out there (to the canyon) after work... and picking-up trash."
When the pandemic first hit, Edgar had to slow down for a few weeks. But, he quickly returned to his daily clean-up schedule, taking his mission to help stop climate change very seriously. "We are very quickly running out of time to stop this crisis."
