SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Ski season has come early to Lake Tahoe as many popular resorts are firing up the lifts early this year.
It’s a 6-day jump on the season for one such resort, Heavenly Mountain Resort, which along with North Star California Resort is set to open Friday.
Another resort, Kirkwood Mountain, will also open. With its craggy cliffs, it wasn’t set to open until next month. Palisades Tahoe has also moved up its opening date to next Saturday.
This is a huge contrast to 2021, according to Cole Zimmerman, the communications manager at Heavenly.
"Mother nature really delivered and there is snow throughout the resort – on the mountain and town," he said. "It's really just setting that vibe, that atmosphere that it is ski and ride season."
"You can see the atmosphere kind of change around town a little bit, a lot of people looking forward to getting on the mountain," said Zimmerman.
This year, actual snow has combined with continued cold temperatures that allow the snow-making machines to do their work.
"Last year it took a while for us to get open," he said. "Heavenly we didn’t open until early to mid-December."
"That opening day just kept getting pushed back," Zimmerman added.
This holiday season, skiers and snowboarders better dig those boots out of the attic and make sure they have their tire chains.
"I would just suggest, it is exciting it’s a weekend, it's opening day – consider carpooling if you're going to come so we can keep some of that parking open," he said.
No matter what, he said, there will be plenty of folks there ready to help people park, buy passes, and even learn to ski.
"Just get ready to have a great time," said Zimmerman.
