Conservative talk radio host Larry Elder – leading in the polls among California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s recall challengers – managed to attract a nearly full house for a campaign rally at San Jose's Calvary Chapel on Thursday.
During an hourlong campaign address, Elder criticized Newsom on a range of issues, including the state’s housing policy, education and law-and-order challenges.
His promise to the packed crowd?
"This is gonna change when I get up there," Elder said to applause Thursday.
Calvary Chapel racked up millions of dollars in fines for holding in-person services during COVID-19 lockdowns, so Elder met a receptive audience when he spoke out against the governor’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
"He has shut down this state in the most severe way, [more] than any of the other 49 governors have," Elder claimed. "While sitting up there at that French Laundry restaurant, with the very people that drafted the mandates that they were violating."
Did the rest of his message land with his San Jose audience? Local residents Ben and Nancy Ferguson sure thought so.
"I was quite impressed with what he wants to do for the state of California," Nancy told KCBS Radio.
Election day is just over a month away, Sept. 14. Every registered voter in the state is due to receive a mail-in ballot no later than Monday.
The state deadline to register to vote is Aug. 30.
