Sacramento, Calif. (KNX) - Legislation introduced in Sacramento seeks to establish an "Ebony Alert" for when young Black women and children go missing.
LISTEN:
It would work like an "Amber Alert" that's put out when a child is abducted, focused on Black youth and women ages 12 to 25.
State Senator Steven Bradford tells KNX reporter, Margaret Carrero, "We just want the same level of resources by both the media and law enforcement to be dedicated to finding these individuals who are loved just as much as their counterparts."
Senator Bradford pointed to what he describes as the overabundance of media coverage in cases involving missing white women, like Gabby Petito who received national attention.
But when it comes to young African American girls going missing, the Senator calls out the noticeable lack of media coverage and the absence of comparable resources allocated to looking for them.
Senator Bradford also says young African American girls and women are often categorized as runaways rather than victims of obduction or kidnapping.
He says he's disappointed that we even need legislation like this.
