SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – A 10-year-old girl was stabbed to death in an East Oakland apartment Monday morning, according to police. The suspect is believed to be the victim's mother.
In a press conference, Acting Chief of Oakland Police Darren Allison called the death a "senseless and horrific act of violence."
Just before noon on Monday, a neighbor told the Oakland Police Department that an adult suspect had killed a 10-year-old girl in the 4500 block of Bancroft Ave.
When officers responded to the scene, they found a bloody knife outside the home. Officers forced entry into the residence and discovered a little girl who was unresponsive with severe injuries to her neck. Police also found the suspect harming themselves with a knife.
The girl was pronounced dead at the scene, while the suspect was transported to a hospital and listed in critical condition.
Chief Allison did not reveal the relationship between the 10-year-old and the suspect, but said they are "known to one another." He also revealed that there had been prior domestic violence calls at the home.
In an interview with KTVU, City Councilmember Noel Gallo said the suspect was the victim's mother. He comforted the girl's family members when they arrived at the scene.
Police are asking anyone with information to call the homicide division at 510-238-3821.
