Mountain lion burned in wildfire dies after release back into wild

A mountain lion treated for burns from a wildfire and released back into the wild died, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Wildlife experts rescued the mountain lion, named Monrovia, in September 2020 during the Bobcat Fire. The large cat was badly burned and treated for her injuries. She was the first mountain lion to be treated, rehabilitated and released back into the wild.

The department noted they sometimes put the collar on the animals for "tracking purposes", but once the animal is back in the wild the department stops tracking them.

Officials said data from Monrovia's collar showed she had stopped roaming. California Fish and Wildlife representatives believe she died sometime around Aug. 15, the Los Angeles Times reported, not far from the spot she was initially rescued.

Her cause of death is unknown.
