'We are saddened and sickened': Reaction as grim details emerge in San Jose shooting

Reaction is pouring in from across the Bay Area, California and the country as grim details emerge in a mass shooting at a light rail yard in San Jose.

Gov. Gavin Newsom, scheduled to appear at an event in Los Angeles County on Wednesday, tweeted that he's "in close contact with local law enforcement and monitoring this situation closely." The event was canceled.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein spoke at a nomination hearing in Washington, D.C. as initial reports of the shooting began to stream in.

Sen. Alex Padilla called it a "dark morning" in San Jose.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigeig weighed in on Twitter.

Rep. Zoe Lofgren, who represents the 19th Congressional District, tweeted a short statement: "To the families of those killed in San Jose this morning - my heart is with you. To those injured - I am hoping for fast & full recoveries.
I am horrified that our nation & the Santa Clara County community keeps witnessing more & more acts of gun violence."

East Bay Rep. Eric Swalwell shared condolences "with the San Jose community and the families affected by this unthinkable tragedy."

San Francisco Mayor London Breed tweeted a brief statement of support: "Horrific news coming out of San Jose. I’ve reached out to Mayor Liccardo to offer my support and condolences. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families."

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf called reports of the incident "devastating."

The San Jose Sharks shared a statement via Twitter.

The San Jose Earthquakes posted a short statement, saying the franchise is "deeply saddened" and expressing support for the emergency responders. The team's PayPal Park is not far from the scene of the shooting.

The San Francisco 49ers, who play at Levi's Stadium in nearby Santa Clara, tweeted support for first responders, calling the shooting "horrific" and saying "violence has no place in our community."

Other Bay Area transit agencies are weighing in, including SFMTA.

BART General Manager Bob Powers released a statement: "On behalf of everyone at BART, let me extend my heartfelt condolences to the VTA family, our partners in Santa Clara County, following the tragic incident this morning. We in the Bay Area transit community share common goals, values and commitment to the public. And, in times like these, we share their grief."

AC Transit tweeted their "heartache after learning of today’s tragedy."

Caltrain, which also serves the South Bay, shared similar sentiments.

Eight people, plus the gunman, were killed in the incident.
