STOCKTON, Calif. (KNX) – Robert Durst, a New York real estate scion who was serving a life sentence for the death of his longtime friend Susan Berman, died Monday.

Durst’s lawyer told the New York Times that the 78-year-old died from cardiac arrest at a Stockton hospital.

“Mr. Durst passed away early this morning while in the custody of California’s Department of Corrections,” Chip Lewis, a trial lawyer for Durst, said.
“We understand that his death was due to natural causes associated with a litany of medical issues we had repeatedly reported to the court over the last couple of years.”

In October, Durst was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole in Berman’s murder after jury found him guilty back in September.
Prosecutors argued that Durst murdered Berman because she was going to talk to police about what she knew about Durst’s wife’s disappearance and death in 1982.

In 2015, Durst was the subject of the popular HBO docuseries, “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.”
