SANTA ANA, Calif. (KNX) – Big changes are coming to the Santa Ana Zoo.
The zoo broke ground last month on a new habitat for river otters, as well as an aboveground trail system for the zoo’s monkeys, according to the Orange County Register.
The new projects, which are part of the zoo’s 20-year $70 million dollar plan, will give the otters a “15-foot waterfall” and a treetop system for the monkeys.
Zoo Manager Ethan Fisher said the new renovations would provide a “more immersive experience” for the zoo.
“We’re going to do these projects and deliver something really special for the community and continue contributing to the conservation of the species in our care,” he told the outlet.
The otter and monkey project is expected to cost $6.6 million. There are also plans to open a new educational building as well as a temporary butterfly exhibit.
The exhibits are expected to open by summer 2023.
