SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – San Franciscans are rushing to buy a special cake directed at the six conservative Supreme Court justices after Roe v. Wade was overturned last week.
Last week, Black Jet Baking Company owner Gillian Lundgren posted a picture to social media of a yellow buttermilk cake coated in rainbow sprinkles with the message of "F--k You" to the six Republican-appointed justices who upheld Mississippi's 15-week abortion ban in a decision last week.
All but Chief Justice John Roberts opted to overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, a pair of Supreme Court decisions that established and reaffirmed constitutional protections for abortion, respectively. The decision cleared the way for a number of states to implement their own abortion bans.
"You know, we're upset, we're feeling lousy, and we're with people and we wanted people to know that," Lundgren said of her feelings after the decision in an interview with KCBS Radio this week.
After Lundgren posted the picture, people wanted to order their own.
"People are very excited about it," Lundgren said. "I think we've heard many many times that, in this horrible time, that it was the first time they had smiled, or laughed or, you know, just had a, like, happy this is their local bakery feeling, which makes us feel great."
Lundgren said she will donate the cake's proceeds to Planned Parenthood, and people can order their own until June 30 at Black Jet's website. Ordered cakes will be available to be picked up throughout the holiday weekend.
"I've been a huge supporter of Planned Parenthood," she said. "They've helped me in the past and I love everything that they do and they are matching donations up until the 30th. And so we're trying to sell as many cakes during that time so that our donation is matched."
The response has been so overwhelming, Lundgren said, that she has bought out her local grocery stores of the miniature letters needed to bake the cake.
"It's just been constant," she said. "So that just feels awesome that we're doing something and especially over Fourth of July weekend, it feels really hilarious and great at the same time."
