SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – The San Francisco Police and Parks and Recreation Departments are trying to assure residents that the city's public parks are safe after a 10-month-old baby was accidentally exposed to fentanyl at Moscone Park in the Marina.
Many experts have described the infant’s exposure to fentanyl at a public park as rare, unlikely, and astonishing, but have also added that this sort of event is possible.
The baby has since been reported to be recovering safely at home.
To prevent this type of incident from happening again, SFPD officers will be stepping up patrols in areas of the city.
"Some of us are parents, and we get it, that’s going to be something that scares everybody, this is a very scary thing that occurred," said SFPD Officer Nicole Pachetti.
Officers will be expected to pay closer attention to parks in general. Officers assigned to Moscone Park in general will be paying particular attention to that area.
"We have officers through the day and night there that are assigned to each sector," she said. "So they will probably be more than likely doing passing calls through there."
But despite the increased effort, SFPD and Parks and Rec can't always manage entirely on their own, according to Pachetti.
"We do have a lower staffing level than we would like right now," she said. Help from the community would better serve to bridge that gap.
"Like if you're seeing something off, or somebody hanging out in the area using drugs that could possibly contaminate an area where children are at, it would be important to speak up," said Pachetti. These sightings would be best reported to that district’s captain.
