SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Two people are in critical condition following a shootout at an East Bay marijuana grow operation on Sunday morning.
San Leandro police received a call at approximately 4:20 a.m. about a burglary in progress at a marijuana cultivation at the 200 block of Adams Avenue, according to a release by authorities.
Officers arrived on the scene and learned that a shootout took place between the burglary suspects and the workers at the marijuana warehouse.
Police found three people wounded by gunfire, including both a site manager and burglary suspect who were each shot at least once and in critical condition, as well as a security guard, who is in stable condition.
Officers located a U-Haul truck fleeing the scene and conducted a high-speed pursuit through Oakland. During the chase, the suspects exited the U-Haul and entered a "newer model" silver Jeep, according to police. Authorities were able to apprehend one of the suspects while they were switching vehicles and recovered the U-Haul van as evidence.
The jeep eventually stopped, the two suspects exited the vehicle and escaped on foot without being caught. The 20 minute pursuit ended in the area of 31st Street and Martin Luther King way. The two suspects were described as "two younger aged Hispanic Males dressed in dark clothing."
An investigation remains ongoing. Authorities said they are also working to also determine if the marijuana operation was legal.
Greg Decker, who works across the street, told KCBS Radio he was surprised the building housed a pot business.
"We have seen armed security people, I thought they were cops actually, early in the morning some time," he said.
"But honestly in all these buildings I couldn’t tell you what half of them do," Decker continued. "There hasn't been much traffic over there. Nobody comes and goes, there’s maybe a couple cars in the parking lot during the day, that’s it. I didn’t even know what they were doing over there."
This is the second high profile shooting in less than a week in San Leandro. Last week a guard for an armored truck was shot and killed during an attempted robbery outside a Kaiser Permanente hospital.
That investigation is also ongoing.
