SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – A California Highway Patrol officer in San Jose has been injured after a tree fell on him while he was responding to the scene of a car crash.
Shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday morning, several CHP officers were responding to a two car accident that was blocking the far right lane on southbound Highway 17, just after the Highway 280 junction.
The officers were gathering information related to the crash when a nearby 60-foot-tall tree fell where they were standing, Ross Lee with the San Jose CHP reported.
The officer, whose name has not been released, was awake and alert after the tree fell on him and was transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Officer Lee said, while he can't say definitively what caused the tree to fall, it was not a result of the cars in the initial accident. Lee added that this is the only incident he's aware of in the Bay Area where a CHP officer has been injured in a weather-related incident.
There is no word yet on when the officer will be discharged. No one else was hurt in the incident.
