EL CAJON, Calif. (KNX) — A trucker was reported dead Tuesday afternoon after an accident on Interstate 8 east of El Cajon in San Diego County. After he reportedly hit the brakes, steel being hauled by the flat-bed truck he was driving crashed through the rear of the cab and impaled him, according to California Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on the eastbound I-8 just past Dunbar Lane, according to CHP spokesperson Officer Travis Garrow.

Garrow said CHP was not unaware as to why the trucker hit the brakes. But when he did, long, beam-like pieces of steel sheet piling shifted forward, crashing through the cab’s window and killing the driver.

The driver, whose name has not been released, died at the scene, Garrow said. There were no other injuries reported in connection with the incident.
