A 54-year-old man is in custody after two Asian women were stabbed in downtown San Francisco on Tuesday afternoon.

San Francisco Police told KCBS Radio that officers responded the incident just before 5 p.m. and found two adult females suffering from various stab wounds near where 4th St. and Stockton St. cross Market St.

Both victims were taken to the hospital, one reportedly with life-threatening injuries. Witnesses told KPIX-5 that a man clutching a knife was walking down Market St. when he approached a bus stop, stabbed the women and then walked away. Their conditions weren't officially released.

San Francisco Supervisor Matt Haney shared the condition and age of one the victims, though that hasn't been confirmed by police.

The suspect, a San Francisco resident, was arrested in the Tenderloin at about 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Charges are pending.

KGO reported that one victim suffered serious bleeding and the other still had the knife in her arm when paramedics arrived. It's not being called a hate crime but that hasn't been ruled out, KCBS Radio has learned.
