The California legislature has approved a bill that could make undocumented immigrants eligible for affordable housing assistance.
Under the proposal, state programs offering loans to first-time homebuyers wouldn’t disqualify applicants based on their immigration status.

Democrats say the bill would remove a hurdle to finding housing for hard-working immigrants, but some Republicans contend that the state should prioritize housing assistance for people who are in the country legally.
The bill passed along party lines in the Assembly. Gov. Gavin Newsom has until September to sign or veto the legislation.
