Vice President Kamala Harris will not make her planned appearance at a car campaign rally at the Cow Palace with Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday.

The event has been canceled, Newsom campaign officials said Thursday afternoon.

Harris has been on an appearance tour of Asia, most recently in Vietnam this week. Instead of stopping in San Francisco next, she will travel onwards to DC.

Harris had pledged her support of Newsom last week as the recall race grows tighter. Current polls show a razor-thin margin between those planning to "yes" and "no" to recall Newsom.

If voters vote "no" on the recall election, Newsom will remain in office. If they vote "yes," then one of 46 candidates whose name is also on the ballot will become the next governor of California.

Conservative talk radio host Larry Elder is the leading candidate to replace Newsom if the governor is recalled.

The rally, part of the "Stop the Republican Recall" campaign was set to take place in the parking lot at the Cow Palace Arena & Event Center in Daly City on Friday, with gates opening at 11 a.m. and starting at 1 p.m. attendees were instructed to drive up and park, staying in their vehicles, with proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test from the last 72 hours.

It's unclear if the event will be rescheduled.
