The kind of dog you own could prevent you from getting homeowners insurance

The San Francisco Chronicle found that while homeowners insurance often does cover dog bite liability expenses, there are some insurance companies that won’t insure homeowners based on the type of dog they have.

According to the analysis conducted by the outlet, State Farm and Allstate only ban dogs that have a previous bite history or a history of vicious displays. Insurance companies such as CSAA, Farmers, Liberty Mutual, Mercury, and Auto Club actually name which types of dogs are banned.

Some of the breeds impacted include pit bulls, Staffordshire bull terriers, Doberman pinschers, Akitas, and rottweilers.

The outlet also reported that claims last year related to dog bites and other dog-related injuries cost insurers $1.12 billion.
