Woman Dead After Driving Off Cliff Along Highway 1

A woman has died in San Mateo County after driving her car off a cliff along Highway 1.

Crews were on the scene by 9:30 a.m. Monday to perform a cliff rescue near Gray Whale Cove south of Devil's Slide. The Mercury News reported the silver Toyota sedan went over the barrier and ended up 200 feet down the cliff.

Witnesses reported the driver, who was the only person in the car, was able to get out of the car, but fell further down the cliff.

Crews were able to rescue her by 11:35 a.m. and transported her to San Francisco General Hospital, but she was later reported dead.

CHP officials are still investigating the cause of the crash and have not released the driver’s identity.

No other cars were involved.
