Gov. Gavin Newsom called the session in the wake of Donald Trump’s election in November. He wants lawmakers to approve an additional $25 million for the state attorney general’s office in anticipation of legal battles against the Trump administration on issues like immigration and the environment.
“It’s not a theoretical exercise. We know what happened the last time Donald Trump was president. He vandalized our progress, he vandalized our programs, he broke the law,” Newsom told reporters.
During Trump’s first term, California sued the administration more than 120 times.
Before the special session begins, state lawmakers are scheduled to swear in more than two dozen new members and elect leaders for the 2025 legislative session.
