A zoo in eastern China has denied claims that their sun bears on display are actually humans dressed in costume.
Last week videos from the zoo went viral after a bear stood up on its hind legs and started acting “uncannily human.” Viewers also made note of the unusual-looking rolls in the bear’s fur.
Per CNN, in a statement written from the perspective of the bear named “Angela", officials from Hangzhou zoo said people “didn’t understand” the species.
The statement read, “I’m Angela the sun bear – I got a call after work yesterday from the head of the zoo asking if I was being lazy and skipped work today and found a human to take my place.
“Let me reiterate again to everyone that I am a sun bear – not a black bear, not a dog – a sun bear.” Zookeepers noted sun bears are from Malaysia and are smaller than other bears and have a different appearance.
It's also worth noting that the zoo was north of 100 degrees when the photo was taken, which had some saying there was no way a human could've made it underneath the weight of a furry costume.
