AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - A bill in Austin would ban Texans from using food stamps to buy junk food.
State Rep. Briscoe Cain from Deer Park, near Houston, filed the bill. It would prohibit SNAP recipients from buying energy drinks, sugary drinks, soda, candy, potato chips and cookies.
Cain says the proposal seeks to curb the spread of diabetes and other health complications. He says roughly three million people in the Lone Star state suffer from diabetes.
If passed, his bill would take effect on September 1st.
