FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price has a challenger in her re-election bid.
Deborah Peoples, the chairwoman of the Tarrant County Democratic Party, announced her candidacy in front of supporters at Angelo's Barbecue.
"One of the things that I've done is talked about (how) local elections matter," Peoples says. "And now I'm going to put my money where my mouth is and not only just support people in local elections but jump into the front."
Peoples says her top priorities include creating a plan for long-term growth.
"I look at the city right now. It's just been a series of crisis after crisis after crisis," says Peoples. "We're doing crisis management, and we're not doing long-term planning and having a vision for long term growth."
Peoples noted Fort Worth's diverse population.
"We have to make sure that decisions we make are inclusive of all of the residents of the city," she says.
Betsy Price was elected mayor in 2011.
She had no challenger in 2013 and 2015; and in 2017, she beat Chris Nettles (who is challenging Kelly Allen Gray for the District 8 seat this year) by a 70-30 split.
"I expect a very spirited race," says Peoples. "And so I am looking forward to it, to talk about the issues to working for the residents of Fort Worth, a city that I love like I've done all along."
Today is the first day of the filing period for the city elections.
The filing period ends February 15th.
Election Day is May 4th.
