DENTON (1080 KRLD) - About 50 people attended a rally outside the Denton County Courthouse Tuesday evening to respond to a White nationalist event over the weekend.
Organizers called the demonstration, "Hate is Not Welcome in Denton County."
"I'm very proud of this county to be so overwhelmingly accepting and diverse," says Tyler Jackson, a 14 year old who identifies as transgender. "But I feel that we still have room for improvement."
Saturday, about a dozen White nationalists gathered near Downtown Denton. Video shows them carrying flags; some were yelling, "Reclaim America."
An employee at a bar says he was assaulted later when he asked a group of people to leave because one had a swastika tattoo.
Denton police have not arrested anyone in that case. They had a presence at the demonstration Tuesday to ensure the safety of participants.
Those participants say they hope local elected officials will condemn activities by White nationalists.
"I feel this event and voting are both bare minimum things people can do to get involved," says UNT student Anjelica Fraga.
