DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The FBI has been asked to assist in the investigation of the beating of a transgender woman in South Dallas.
Muhlaysia Booker was attacked last Friday at the Royal Crest apartments in east Oak Cliff.
Police say it started when Booker was involved in a minor traffic accident. After a brief confrontation, 29-year-old Edward Thomas and several other people began attacking Booker, sending her to the hospital.
The entire incident was caught on video.
Lt. Vincent Weddington says they are reviewing that video and expects more arrests to come.
"This case is certainly disturbing. It shocks the conscious of anyone who looks at it," Weddington says.
Investigators are reviewing the claim that Thomas was offered $200 dollars to beat Booker.
Olinka Green is a resident of the area and says what she saw made her sick.
"We talk about hate and racism, we lay it on people that don't look like us. To me this act was an act of terrorism. What makes it worse is that people were egging it on. Is this Nazi Germany? When people stood by an watch them march the Jews away, " Green said.
The FBI has been asked to review the case to determine if hate crime charges are appropriate.
Thomas remained in the Dallas County jail on Monday afternoon, with his bail set $75,000.
Anyone with information about the incident may call Detective Christopher Evans at 214-671-3584 or email Christopher.evans@dpd.ci.dallas.tx.us.
