HASLET (1080 KRLD) - Firefighters are used to fighting fires and helping people but firefighters from Haslet Fire Rescue recently got an unusual call. A longhorn steer's head and horns were stuck inside a round hay bale feeder.
Haslet firefighters responded and took a new piece of equipment, a Hurst eDraulic, which is a battery powered Jaws of Life, making it portable and easier to use.
Five firefighters responded and one recorded the entire rescue.
Mays said the men jumped inside the hay bale feeder but the longhorn was very powerful and kept trying to pull his head of it. The firefighters leaned up against the other side of it so they could cut the animal loose. When the longhorn was finally loose he stomped his feet so the firefighters knew he was mad. They stood still and he eventually took off.
"The best part of being a firemen is you don't know what the next call is going to be. We train in fire and EMS but we have to be able to think outside the box at any given moment to remedy the situation," Mays said.
Mays said he's glad they had the technology to set the longhorn loose.
When the rescue was over, they posted the video to their facebook page and fire departments from around the world have been liking and sharing the video.
The video has almost 1 million views.
