Gas Leak In Garland Causes Street, Business Closures

GARLAND (1080 KRLD) - UPDATED 12:03 P.M.: Garland police are investigating after a regulator station was allegedly intentionally damged and caused major road closures.

According to Garland police spokesman Pedro Barrineau, a suspect, identified as 40-year-old Lauro Espinosa Gonzales, is in custody after a backpack near the scene of where a gas valve was damaged was found.

Police were able to find Gonzales' I.D. inside the backpack as well as an ax. Gonzales was originally found and arrested for previous warrants but further investigation revealed that he was the one responsible for damaging the regulator station.

Garland fire and Atmos are at the scene of a gas leak that has caused three businesses to evacuate.

According to fire crews, an 8-inch above ground gas line was damaged in front of 5400 N. Garland Road at 5:12 a.m. on Saturday.

Garland Road has been shut down. Atmos crews are at the scene working to fix the leak. No injuries have been reported.

It is unknown how long the road closure will last at this time.
