ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD) - Two people have died and another is fighting for her life after being hit by a wrong-way driver.
Police say the chain-reaction crash happened around 7:00 last night on Matlock, just south of I-20. The wrong-way driver -- Tristan Bustillos of Arlington -- died at the scene.
"It was very chaotic," said responding officer Lt. Chris Cook, with the Arlington Police Department. "You can imagine. There were a lot of people there, people trying to help. It was just difficult, not only for police officers, but for first responders and for the citizens who saw this happen."
Cook says Bustillos was traveling very fast when he careened into a car carrying two women and a dog. Both women were rushed to the hospital. One of them died, the other is in critical condition. Police say the dog was also seriously injured.
Two other drivers were involved in the crash as well, they were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Now police are working to determine why Bustillos crossed into the wrong lane. They say there are many things that could have caused the accident, and are trying to determine if he was driving with a medical condition, an impairment, or if he was under the influence. Right now, they don't have any leads.
Cooke says Bustillos was driving so fast, there would have been no way for other drivers to avoid him.
