AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - Nearly 2.5 million Texans have now applied for unemployment benefits since mid-March.

The Texas Workforce Commission reports that's the equivalent of three years' worth of applications in just two months.

More than $5 billion in benefits have been paid.

TWC also says while the number of phone calls is still at nearly record highs, the deluge is beginning to decrease.

The Commission also says the wait time for claims-processing is improving.
