DALLAS (1080 KRLD) -The Dallas County Medical Examiner has identified the girl killed Wednesday afternoon in Old East Dallas.

Police say 9-year-old Brandoniya Bennett was shot when gunmen who were targeting a neighbor fired into the wrong apartment.

Dallas police say a group of people gathered outside an apartment in Old East Dallas around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and demanded a tenant come outside.

Police say the tenant refused, so several people went around to the back of the apartment along Munger Avenue. Police say several people fired into the building, but police say the gunmen shot into the wrong apartment.

Police say officers performed CPR on Bennett. Dallas Fire Rescue took the girl to Baylor Hospital, but she died.

"I really feel bad because I've got a grandbaby. I've got a grandbaby that child's age. They go to the same school, probably," says a woman who lives nearby.

Police say the believe the shooting was gang-related, but they have not made any arrests. They do not have a description of the gunmen or the car they were driving.

"It's tough enough when it's someone who's shot and injured, but it's magnified when it's a small child," says Dallas Police Sergeant Warren Mitchell.

Police have increased patrols in the area and parking marked vehicles in the complex and neighboring areas. Others who live nearby say the neighborhood has become less safe.

"You'll see kids out here at 11, 12, 1 o'clock in the morning. Where's your parents," says a woman who knows the girl's grandmother.
