Police say three people died in a wrong-way crash on North Loop 820 Sunday night in Haltom City.
They say a pick-up truck started going west in the eastbound lanes of 820 near Highway 377 about 8:35.
Haltom City Police say that truck hit a BMW going the right direction head-on.
In the BMW, a man, woman and girl all died at the scene. The driver of the pick-up truck was taken to the hospital with "life threatening" injuries, but his condition and identity were not released.
Police closed eastbound 820 about three hours Sunday night while they investigated. They believe alcohol was a factor in the crash; test results were pending Monday morning.
The Texas Department of Transportation says 600 people were killed in head-on crashes in 2019. The agency says 1,091 wrong-way crashes were reported across the state last year.
Of those crashes, 184 were reported on "rural" highways, and 907 were on "urban" highways. Nineteen wrong-way crashes on rural roads were fatal, 48 crashes on urban roads had fatalities.
TxDOT launched its "End the Streak" campaign last year. The last day there were no fatalities on Texas Roads was November 7, 2000.
